Role Play Information

Deep in the Threefold Land, in the valley beneath a mountain named Chaendaer, there is the remains of a city called Rhuidean.

The city was built by the Jenn Aiel but was never finished before they died out. The Aes Sedai with the Jenn realized that they had mistaken the Jenn as the ones to fulfill the prophecy that a child would be born from them to fight the Dark One. They now realized that the warrior Aiel must be the one to bring forth the child of prophecy and set out to secure the history of the Aiel and the prophecy itself by creating the Ter'Angreal that would become the testing ground for future Chiefs and Wise Ones. For by that time, the Aiel had forgotten everything of their heritage, safe the conquest of their harsh new lands and their wars with one another. The Aes Sedai were cautious, not wanting to destroy the Aiel with too much knowledge but at the same time making sure their legacy was preserved and their leaders would know the truth. And so they visited the Wise Ones in their dreams and gave them these instructions.

Any man that would become a Clan Chief has to visit the terrible glass columns within Rhuidean and face the truth of their heritage, and the knowledge of the prophecy that must be fulfilled through them. Only those who returned, only one in three, had demonstrated the strength required of a Chief. Those who lacked the strength to face those truths never returned at all. Men that wish to undergo the testing of Rhuidean must obtain the permission of six Wise Ones before being allowed to go through.
Men can only enter Rhuidean once. To enter it twice means certain death, even for those strong enough to face it's truths.
The men that return from Rhuidean are all marked

Women that are to become Wise Ones visit the city twice. Once at the beginning of their apprenticeship to the Wise Ones, during which they pass through a Ter'Angreal much like the one Accepted's in the White Tower use. The second time, at the end of their apprenticeship when the Wise Ones consider her ready to join them, they too have to enter the glass columns, facing the same truths and the same knowledge of the prophecy as the men. But women have a much higher success rate than the men.

The Peace of Rhuidean was created by the Aes Sedai. A law that demanded a permanent truce to all that came and which could not be broken. No violence is permitted within sight of the Chaendaer mountain by Aiel to other Aiel. The only exception to this is non-Aiel who wander into the valley of Rhuidean. To protect the secret and the future hope of the Light, a prescribed penalty is enforced: it is certain death to all non-Aiel that enter the valley of Rhuidean.

As a final act of protection against unwanted eyes, the Aes Sedai placed a One Power protection over the city, shrouding it in a permanent mantle of mist and obscuring the city from view. Even to the Aiel that would be in the valley, awaiting the return of their new Chief or Wise Ones.

Until the revelation of the Car'a'carn, the Chief of Chiefs, the truth of Rhuidean is known only to Wise Ones and Chiefs and they use it to guide their people, while protecting them from the horrible truth at the same time. Many of the general Aiel beliefs, including the public version of their Prophecy, are born from this. Distributed by the Wise Ones in such a way that the Aiel would abide by it while shielding them from those aspects of the truth that could destroy them.
